Guidelines for Healthy Eating.

The following are some guidelines for Healthy Eating.  I strongly believe in the 80/20 rule.  There is nothing wrong with a McDonalds, Fry up, binge weekend, etc as long as they are supported by a healthy diet the majority of the time.  Here are some tips that if followed, will serve you well and are not (too) difficult to follow…in no particular order

  • If it’s man-made..avoid it.  Butter is always better than margarine, sugar is better than Aspartame.
  • Avoid Wheat where possible.  Sadly it’s everywhere, even if you try and avoid it, you’ll still end up eating it.
  • Most breads are rubbish.  If you are going to eat bread, treat it the same way you would wine or chocolate and buy the good stuff.  If the ingredient list contains any E Numbers or a Flour Treatment Agent, put it down and step away.  It may look like bread, but it isn’t. Purchase the small bakery ones, about 3 quid a loaf, and freeze it in order to make it last.
  • Drink Water. Choice number one at all times.  Ideally still.  If sparkling make sure it’s the naturally sparkling kind. Aim for one litre per day.  2 if you’re feeling up for it.
  • Coffee is allowed, once a day, prior to noon.  Give yourself a break from it occasionally.
  • Avoid Soya.  Fermented soya is fine, (miso, tempeh) but most of poor quality, and an estrogen mimicker which is fine if you want to have awful PMS or Moobs.
  • EAT VEGETABLES.  Try and make this 60% of your diet.  Raw or lightly steamed is best.
  • CHEW. YOUR. FOOD.    Teeth and saliva are the start of the digestion process. Give your food a head start – literally.
  • AVOID sugar.  It’s evil.  The true cause of all chronic illness, I kid you not.
  • Pay no attention to the Cholesterol debate.  Fats are good for you.  Sugar kills, fats don’t.
  • Do not drink with your meals.  A small amount of water or a glass of wine with dinner is okay.
  • Take your supplements.  Sadly our food, lifestyles and diets are not enough.  Always buy good quality supplements, accept the fact that you’ll be taking something once a day, for life.
  • Did I mention chewing?
  • Don’t eat “low fat” foods, they usually contain more sugar instead of fats.  Fats are good (see above)
  • Nuts are your friends. 5-10 is enough for a serving – sadly.  Unsalted/Unroasted of course.
  • Learn how to make Lentil Dahl.  Easy, fast, nutritious and cheap.
  • Never learn to bake. (that was my mother’s advice)
  • Flax seed oil – one tablespoon per day.  Not yummy, but you get used to it. Again, fats are good.
  • Take a digestive enzyme with your main meal after the age of 35.
  • Don’t eat at your desk. Walk away, breathe, then eat.  And chew.
  • Grapefruit, although tasty are also evil.  Only eat them occasionally.
  • Try the following…Chia Seeds, Hemp seeds, Flax seeds
  • Cook with Coconut oil instead of Olive oil.  Also very nice replacement to butter
  • Never, ever drink Diet drinks. Ever.

Spring Blog

With the first signs of Spring, our thoughts turn to the renewal and regeneration of the world around us. This is a perfect time to consider doing a detox, an internal “spring cleaning”.

The organs of elimination, if they aren’t fully functioning, then you are falling at the first hurdle. Most people think of the liver when detoxing, but the lymph system, urinary system, bowels,lungs and skin all have a role to play.

Most toxins take place in the body as acids, and these are what must be flushed out during a detox. Therefore, increasing your alkaline intake is crucial – acidic forming foods are eliminated during a detox. If you are not able to “juice fast” then consider avoiding all foods with an animal origin and all forms of sugar – natural or otherwise. Also, add a green supplement to your diet. This can be in the form of capsules or powder and it’s best to start off slowly and work up to a level where you start to feel the difference.

We all know how hard the liver works but are you aware that it has over 500 functions? The detoxing it does is a two-stage process and takes place mainly between 1 and 3 am. For this organ to do its job well, it requires some key ingredients as tools for this process. It is likely that you are aware of the herb Milk Thistle, I would recommend purchasing a tincture of this and taking it at night before bed.

Kidneys – drink a minimum of two litres of purified water a day. Acids and waste must be neutralised, diluted and flushed away and water is our best way of doing this. You can add lemon juice to water if you wish, as it is alkaline forming in the body.

The lymph system will take up the additional toxins that the blood will not hold. Your body will only allow so many toxins in one place at any given time and will force other systems and organs to “share” the burden. As the lymphatic system has no pump like the heart, exercise must provide the movement. However, do not think that going down the gym is the best way to detox. Let your body focus on relaxing and letting go, rather than asking it to build muscle, shed fat and put it through its paces whilst detoxing. Gentle stretching, skin brushing and pleasant walks are all that’s required. You can make great cleansing teas from the following herbs: Cleavers, Mullein, Yarrow, Red Clover, Ginger, Nettle and Dandelion and Cayenne.

We rarely think of toxicity being eliminated from the nose, but here is where the lungs come into their own. Waste can be eliminated in the form of gas as well and putting aside times during the day to solely concentrate on breathing fully into the lungs and exhaling deeply will assist this. Steam inhalations can also be beneficial and if you are familiar with using aromatherapy then adding a few drops of cinnamon, peppermint or clove can further open up bronchial passage ways.
Our skin is also a way of eliminating toxicity. Skin brushing using a natural bristle brush with strokes towards the heart is a great way to start the day. This is a five minute investment of time that can really make a difference. If you’re so inclined you could treat yourself to a massage̶ideally a gentle relaxing one is recommended.

Finally, but so importantly, is the function of the bowels. In the West, with our three meals-a-day diet, we eat far more than is actually required. We regularly overload the system with the huge task of breaking down a complex array of foods and other substances. Reducing your food intake or at least simplifying it will help your detoxing process. The physical body cannot digest and detox at the same time, and reducing your daily calorie intake may be beneficial. Colonic irrigation and coffee enemas are highly recommended. As the body’s largest area of elimination, it’s imperative that you get your bowels moving more than once a day in order to flush out toxins.
